Bumps in the Road

I recently received some devastating news for something I really wanted. During finals mayhem, I went out of my way to get an interview and then received the sorry email. I’m not sure why I wasn’t a good candidate. I thought I had great credentials. When things like this happen, it always makes me question the decisions I have chosen.

For those of you who don’t know, I am not majoring in the fashion field, I am a Biology major. I always find it more difficult to find opportunities for what I want to do (styling) because of it. I have to build connections on my own that are far from my major. Some people question why I don’t just major in fashion but I went into college with an interest in the human body and science (plus it’s something I have always been good at). With a hint of the fashion bug in high school, it spurred into a full throttle passion in college and then into something I wanted to pursue. I still want my Biology major because it still interests me, but I want fashion as my career.

Even though I didn’t get the position I wanted, I thought about all the opportunities I have found myself this year. In my freshman year of college, I was shy and lacking the confidence to go out there. Then I promised myself that this year, sophomore year, would be my time. I found a great opportunity blogging, got more involved with the fashion scene at school, and even joined the planning committee for Fresh Traditions, a fashion show that helps emerging Hmong designers. I have also improved a great deal from when I started blogging. With the support of my boyfriend, sister, and friends, I have come this far.

Second Year of Blogging

I just have to keep my head up and keep being proactive. Things will all happen in good time. Good things always come to good people. From reading the Secret I have learned , if you want it enough you will receive what you want in the end.  Now we wait and keep our head up high.

Txuj Ci Showcase Unlimited: A Night of Local Asian American LGBTQ & Ally Artists

With the itch to try something new and network, I decided to model in the Txuj Ci mini-fashion show hosted by local Asian American LGBTQ and ally artists. The MC duos, Fue Khang-Kong Pha and Mdy Yang-Linda Hawj, were hilarious and kept the atmosphere light and inviting. Acts from singing, dancing and live charcoal drawing displayed the hidden talents within the LGBTQ and Hmong community.

I had the opportunity to meet and model for Sina Yi, a local designer. Her down to earth attitude and hair styling skills will never be forgotten. She displayed a new take on Cambodian wear with modern lengths and cuts. Yi also chose to show two patterned dresses that were exquisite. The peplum waist was definitely on trend as well as the layered dress. Her fabric choices were to die for and I would definitely model for her again.

As someone in the background at fashion shows, I now understand the adrenaline rush from being on the runway. Inexperienced modeling has been great so far and maybe I’ll unexpectedly show up on the runway at another show!
